Digicel sells El Salvador operations to GITES as focus shifts to Caribbean

Digicel announced on Monday that it has signed a definitive agreement to sell its El Salvador operations to General International Telecom El Salvador (GITES) as it sharpen its focus on its core Caribbean markets.

Digicel said its exit from El Salvador is part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen its financial and competitive position, which also includes refinancing the business, an improved economic outlook, a ratings upgrade, and a renewed emphasis on innovation and investment.

Digicel group CEO Marcelo Cataldo said the company’s stronger financial foundation enables it to focused on investing in the networks, products, technology, and customer experience that will drive its next phase of growth across the Caribbean, including continued investment in subsea connectivity, fibre expansion, and network capacity.   

“We are incredibly optimistic about Digicel’s future in the Caribbean,” Cataldo said in a statement We are investing in our networks, technology, products and customer experience, and we intend to continue building on the progress we have made to deliver greater value for our customers and communities across the region.”   

No financial details were disclosed regarding the deal with GITES. Digicel said it expects to complete the transaction – which is still subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals – during the first half of 2027.
