Emerging markets have always been quick to adopt innovative mobile technologies:  low ARPUs means this is essential to creating a strong business case. In 2013 as we see smartphone penetration in emerging markets rising rapidly, we’ll see this trend continue, with new, efficient technologies deployed throughout the network.

Because of this network investment, there will be a strong potential growth in backhaul services. Operators in emerging territories have to be able to cope with the huge anticipated increase in network data and they must have an efficient network infrastructure in place. This increase in data usage is ironically due to more innovation in the form of pioneering new mobile services, such as remote payment systems.

This leaves a great opportunity for the deployment of carrier-grade point to multipoint (PMP) microwave systems, especially in densely packed urban areas. Due to PMP’s efficiency savings and the fact it uses almost half the equipment of older point to point deployments, it’s a highly effective solution to meet network capacity performance required in these territories at a low total cost of ownership.
