Angola Cables and TM Global, the global and wholesale arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), are planning a new subsea route that could deliver much lower latency levels between Asia and South America.

Industry reports indicate that the partner companies have obtained a proof of concept certification for a proposed subsea link between Asia and South America: the Express Southern Hemisphere cable.

This is a potentially highly significant development. As the cable’s name suggests, it will focus on the southern hemisphere; at present much of the traffic between Asia and South America goes via the northern hemisphere – a longer journey, with all that implies for latency.

The proposed, much more direct route for the new subsea cable will bypass the Middle East and Europe, improving capacity and, more importantly, delivering much lower latency levels between Asia and South America. It is also likely to spur the creation of more effective digital ecosystems within the southern hemisphere.

It could also pave the way for a global digital highway stretching from South America to Asia via Africa but, in the short term, the opportunity for companies providing backhaul and various forms of content to enjoy faster, more robust connections will no doubt be welcomed.
