Nokia announced on Tuesday that it has teamed with Global Fiber Peru to help complete deployment of a new subaquatic fibre network to bring multi-gigabit broadband access to 400 communities in the Amazon rainforest.

The new subaquatic network is buried in the Amazon River in the region where Peru, Colombia and Brazil share borders, connecting the localities of Iquitos and Santa Rosa de Yaraví (Peru), Leticia (Colombia) and Tabatinga (Brazil).

The network enables Global Fiber Peru to offer the first FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) broadband access service to the 500,000 users in the region. The operator can also now offer multi-gigabit services for enterprise users in sectors such as oil production, agriculture, timber extraction, fishing, tourism and border trade.

“This achievement bridges a significant digital gap in remote areas previously inaccessible by traditional means,” said Global Fiber CEO Obed Dionisio.

According to Global Fiber Peru’s parent company, Grupo Satelital, the initial phase of the project was completed two years ago, having connected the district of Yurimaguas to the municipality of Iquitos through the Amazon River. Nokia supplied the second phase of the project from Iquitos to the other localities.

Nokia supplied a complete solution for the project, including its 1830 Photonic Service Switch, 7750 service routers, 7250 interconnect routers, 7210 services access systems, network service platform, FX 8 and FX 16 optical line terminals and fiber optical network terminals. Nokia also supplied its Beacon 1 devices that it says help ensure a premium Wi-Fi experience within the customer premises.

The deployment was carried out in collaboration with local partner FYCO, which specialises in fibre telecom networks in Latin America. Nokia and FYCO are also providing training, professional services and maintenance services.

Nokia said its deal with Global Fiber Peru to complete the fibre network also includes upgrades for its existing fibre networks in Lima, Cusco and Huancayo.
