Guam-based telco Docomo Pacific has deployed fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) solutions from Harmonic to deliver 10G broadband services to its customers.

According to a statement from Harmonic on Tuesday, Docomo Pacific deployed Harmonic’s cOS virtualized broadband core, Wharf switch and Fin optical line terminals (OLTs) to bring fibre broadband connectivity to more than 10,000 residents across Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

“Rolling out FTTP allows us to address electrical power volatility and grounding challenges, reduce operating costs and ensure a reliable, always-on ultra high-speed broadband service for subscribers,” said Mike Smith, executive VP of network operations at Docomo Pacific.

Smith added that Harmonic’s virtualised approach to FTTP enabled the telco to roll out 10G fibre quickly. “In less than five weeks, Harmonic successfully designed, architected, delivered and deployed a fibre-to-the-home solution.”

Harmonic says its virtualised FTTP solution reduces costs by simplifying the deployment of OLT shelves in outdoor cabinets and remote OLT devices in outdoor nodes. It also minimizes new construction, permitting and building constraints, the vendor added.

Meanwhile, Harmonic said its cOS Central “provides real-time insights into network health and AI-based actionable recommendations” to ensure reliability and reduce truck rolls.

The rollout will make Docomo Pacific the fastest broadband provider in Guam. According to Guam Office of Infrastructure Planning and Development, Hawaiian Telecom currently is the only ISP offering 1-Gbps connectivity. Up to now, Docomo Pacific’s fastest broadband offering is 120 Mbps.

In September last year, the Office of the Governor of Guam released its Five-Year Action Plan to develop the island’s broadband internet infrastructure and close the digital divide. The plan, which includes free island-wide wireless internet access, middle-mile architecture and workforce development, is backed by by a $156 million fund from the US Department of Commerce.

The Commonwealth of Northern Marianas (CNMI) Broadband Policy and Development (BPD) Office also plans to develop free broadband services under its own five-year action plan, which is expected to be finalised by May this year.
