PLDT’s enterprise subsidiary ePLDT is set to invest US$600 million to build its 12th data centre facility in the Philippines, a move to remain competitive against rivals in B2B.

The Manila Times reported, ePLDT president and CEO Victor Genuino told media that the global average investment to build a data centre was between US$6 million to US$9 million per megawatt (MW), as he detailed the company is aiming to build a centre with a capacity of 100MW for its 12th.

The first phase of the construction of its 11th data centre, known as VITRO Sta. Rosa, will begin in H1 2024 with the aim to complete the 50MW centre by Q1 2025. The company’s total capacity will increase to around 200MW once both sites are completed.

The firm will decide in 2025 whether the enterprise arm of PLDT will build a normal, hyper scaler or generative AI data centre.

"Then after that, we hope to see, depending on the take up of the space, whether we need to start building already. I think what is important for us is we already secured the property, and we already started preparing for the designs of the data centre because the technology is changing so fast," said Genuino.
