The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has opened a public consultation regarding the allocation of spectrum in the in the 700MHz, 2300MHz and 2600MHz bands.

The enquiry is the first of its kind in Malaysia, and underlines the importance of the bands in question to the Malaysia’s five-year National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan.

The plan is aimed at providing a 30Mb/s average data rate for users in 98% of Malaysia’s populated regions by 2023. Achieving this goal will rely on optimising the spectrum in the aforementioned bands.

In a document centred on the enquiry, MCMC lays out its preliminary proposals for the optimal bandwidth for each spectrum band based on its own study. The regulator states that following these suggestions should “ensure optimised use of spectrum”.

MCMC has also detailed its suggestions for the allocation process, pricing standards, and a broad timeline. The enquiry is open until 30th August.
