Tele2 Latvia announced it will invest €20 million to upgrading its network and the deployment of 5G this year, as well as constructing a new data core.

In a translated statement, the company detailed it will switch on 300 new 5G base stations and upgrade the same number of 4G base stations across the country.

Tele2 Latvia CTO Liga Krumiņa said the investment will be a third higher than last year’s network investment as the operator prioritises 5G and network modernisation, as “data consumption in the Tele2 network increases every year”. The company reported there was a 19% increase in data consumption in the last year.

The Tele2 5G network is currently available in 54 populated locations in the eastern European country, with base stations [tapping into the 700MHz](https://developingtelecoms.com/telecom-business/telecom-regulation/12615-all-available-spectrum-sold-in-latvia-s-700mhz-auctions.html) and 3.5GHz frequencies.
