Indosat Ooredoo chose Cisco for the construction of its 5G-ready transport network for the island of Java, a move to deliver one of the most advanced transport networks in Southeast Asia.

In a statement, the Indonesian operator said the transport network will be based on new converged Software-defined Networking (SDN) and Segment Routing IPv6 (SRv6) architecture.

Having a converged SDN transport network provides more capacity, scalability and improved latency, the operator explained. It will also be capable of supporting enterprise business, consumer broadband, fixed and mobile services.

Segment routing will provide key 5G requirements such as end-to-end network slicing and low latency capabilities. The technology also provides unified, policy-aware network architecture with seamless integration between the transport and the data centre domains.

The operator hailed the transport network as a “critical milestone” in aims to transform Ooredoo’s network into “one of the most modern transport networks in Southeast Asia." Alongside the company’s fibre cable rollout, the Ooredoo stated it is preparing to provide new high quality and scalable connectivity services.

Medhat Elhusseiny, Indosat Ooredoo chief technology and information officer said: “This will allow us to simplify our network, removing redundant layers and legacy technologies, optimize our cost while delivering fast on-demand high-quality low-latency connectivity services for 5G, cloud computing and IoT for both consumers and enterprises across Indonesia.”

Sanjay Kaul, Cisco Asia-Pacific and Japan service provider business president, added: “Our focus is to ensure that Indosat Ooredoo has a strong foundation from which to grow revenues, optimize costs and mitigate risk.

“As digital transformation continues to accelerate across the world, consumers and businesses will benefit from Indosat Ooredoo, 5G services on the new converged SDN transport infrastructure and SRv6 provided by Cisco.”
